WHAT TO ASK FOR FROM A BREEDER WHEN BUYING A PWD PUPPY
When you are ready to buy a puppy please keep in mind the health testing we do on our dogs. NOT EVERY BREEDER WHO CLAIMS TO DO IT DOES IT. You should be asking for copies of the following health certificates on both parents of the litter you are looking at:
1. Optigen certificate to test for PRA which, if your puppy is affected,
can cause your PWD to go totally blind. Dogs are rated on a scale of A or Normal;
B or Carrier; C or Affected.
2. GM-1 or Storage certificate to test for Storage Disease which is a neurological disorder.
3. OFA certificate from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals which gives a rating to hips and elbows x-rays.
4. CERF certificate which is updated yearly which is the Canine Eye Registry
Foundation which, after a canine ophthalmologist looks at the dog's eyes, will
certify the eyes are free of cataracts, glaucoma, pannus, etc.
5. Penn State has recently developed a DNA marker test for JDCM and rates dogs as Probable Normal, Probable Carriers and Probable Affected. All the dogs in my breeding program have been DNA tested for JDCM.
